The Materials Recovery Center (MRC) offers residents a place to get rid of their stuff. The goal of the MRC is to reuse or recycle as much material as possible instead of sending it to a landfill.
The MRC is located at the site of the former industrial landfill. The MRC accepts a variety of wastes and recyclables from the WLSSD community.
Materials Accepted for a fee
- Mattresses
- Concrete
- Drywall
- Lumber

Materials Accepted and recycled free of charge

- Food waste in compostable bags
Items that can be re-used are collected and placed in a reuse area. Other MRC customers can take these items at no charge, keeping them out of a landfill.
Appliances, electronics and tires contain useful materials AND toxic substances. These items are recycled to prevent the useful portions from going to waste and the toxic substances from entering the environment. These items are banned from the garbage by Minnesota law and WLSSD Ordinance.
Food waste in compostable bags is collected in a separate container near the MRC gatehouse. It is delivered to the WLSSD Organics Facility to be made into Garden Green. The MRC staff provides compostable bags to residents & small businesses free of charge.
Alternate uses have been found for concrete, sheetrock, lumber, textiles and more. Mattresses are also collected for recycling.
